Austin expected to add 6,000 residents this summer

Austin's population is expected to swell by more than 6,000 people between July and August, according to a new U.S. Census Bureau analysis.

The data compiled by Austin Business Journal affiliate Business First showed the city growing from about 1.784 million people to about 1.79 million. The newspaper analyzed populations in 942 U.S. metropolitan and micropolitan areas and projected growth using a computer program.

New York City will remain the most populous metropolitan area in America with an estimated population of 18.97 million as of July 1. It is followed by Los Angeles (12.89 million), Chicago (9.51 million), Dallas-Fort Worth (6.53 million) and Houston (6.12 million).
Austin was ranked 35th nationwide.

A separate report last year said nearly half a million Americans moved to Texas between July 2008 and the same month in 2009, making it the most moved-to state in the U.S. that year.
